Green Generation is Ireland’s first biomethane to grid facility, converting food processing residues to renewable energy and high value organic fertiliser.

Through the CBE JU ELLIPSE project, Green Generation will work on maximising VFA production from individual and mixed waste streams, including bellygrass, glycerine and dairy sludges, with the aim of improving PHA production efficiency in accordance with a zero-waste approach.

Green Generation will test this at pilot (1 cubic meter) scale at their facility in Kildare (Ireland) using varying ratios of real wastes from nearby food processors. As led by the project partners they will test various mechanisms for improving yield, such as AnMBRs, pH control, varying ratios of wastes and/or nanoparticle inclusion.

In collaboration with project partners, Green Generation will also seek to maximise propionic and valeric acid production from the aforementioned waste streams to produce PHBV grades with valerate content between 5-25% for wet or rigid packaging. They will employ their deep understanding of industrial-scale waste processing and microbial systems to maximise the potential for project success and subsequent deployment.
