Waste2Value Cluster – ELLIPSE & MIXMATTERS & BRILIAN
In the EU, 2.1 billion tonnes of waste are generated each year. To address this, the EU has established ambitious targets for reducing landfill use and increasing recycling efforts, particularly focusing on packaging waste to minimize its environmental impact. The overarching aim is to encourage the transition toward more sustainable value chains, spanning from the primary sector to the marketplace, in support of a circular economy.
The Waste2Value Cluster formed by the three EU-funded projects ELLIPSE, MixMatters and BRILIAN aims to promote the conversion of various waste streams into valuable bio-products, including bio-plastics, bio-based fertilizers, and ingredients. It emphasizes circular, sustainable business models and resource efficiency to achieve this goal.

Waste2Value Key Results
- Ellipse will optimise biowaste treatment to efficiently produce VFAs as precursors for PHA biopolymers, alongside developing biodegradable biomaterials suitable for innovative fertiliser and packaging products.
- Brilian will create a comprehensive toolkit encompassing organisational, logistical and sustainability aspects, focusing on the circular use of by-products and industrial scale-up of valorisation processes developed for 10 value chains.
- MixMatters will design and showcase an Integrated system that effectively separates and valorises mixed bio-waste streams within the agri-food sector, generating a diverse array of high-value bio-products.

The Waste2Value Alliance projects
MixMatters – Website
The MixMatters project provides an integrated solution for the efficient valorization of mixed biological waste, combining a modular separation unit and a valorization hub. Through demonstrations in Spain, it will address the challenge of processing heterogeneous waste streams containing organic matter and impurities, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions and promote circularity in the bioeconomy.
Brilian – Website
The BRILIAN project drives the adoption of sustainable business models in rural areas to valorize agricultural residues and by-products, boosting rural development and economic resilience. By optimizing 10 bio-based value chains through pilots in Denmark, Italy, and Spain, the project fosters circularity, reduces environmental impact, and strengthens rural communities.
