On 8–9 October 2025, at Veronafiere, the International Fair on Energy Efficiency and Renewables took place. In this framework, a specific section was dedicated to digestate valorization, entitled “Innovation and Circularity in Treatment: Strategies for the Valorization of Digestate”.
The fair was designed to meet the needs of both companies and visitors, allowing them to create a customised visit path. An AI system suggested the most convenient route through the exhibition and recommended the most relevant sessions based on personal interests.
The event included 38 specialised conferences focused on the industrial sectors represented at mcTER EXPO, and 8 thematic conferences and round tables on energy efficiency and transition. Supported by Veronafiere, these covered topics such as the Energy Transition in Italy and Veneto, the Food, Pharmaceutical and Chemical industries, the Naval sector, Data Centres, Smart Cities, and Artificial Intelligence in Energy.
Within this context, on 9 October 2025, the Horizon ELLIPSE Project was presented to a technical audience composed of members of the Ordine degli Ingegneri di Verona e Provincia and local farmers during the event “Innovation and Circularity in Treatment: Strategies for the Valorization of Digestate.” The event was organised by the Associazione degli Ingegneri per l’Ambiente e il Territorio in collaboration with the Dipartimento di Biotecnologie – Università di Verona.
During the presentation, specific technical insights were provided on the sequential filtration processes (pressure-driven membranes) applied to digestate within the ELLIPSE project framework. These include a solid/liquid separation step, followed by ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis of the liquid fraction, aimed at fractionating nutrients into their nitrogen-, phosphorus-, and potassium-based components.
Furthermore, it was demonstrated how the reverse osmosis concentrate, or alternatively the permeate from the ultrafiltration, rich in ammonia, can be directed to a membrane contactor for the production of ammonium-based biofertilisers, showcasing an advanced and circular approach to nutrient recovery.
The session was attended by around 15–20 participants, including environmental engineers and local farmers, and represented an important opportunity to share ELLIPSE’s innovative results and promote sustainable and circular solutions for nutrient recovery from digestate.
